Cambridge, a quaint lil town in England that everyone has heard of at least once in their lifetime. Despite its reputation, I only explored this town recently after living in the UK for 6 years because let’s be honest, Cambridge is well-known for its university rather than its scenery. This itinerary is designed to guide you through a relaxing day in Cambridge, including hassle-free transportation options, a dive into the local arts scene, and the quintessential Cambridge punting experience.

Getting to Cambridge from London

Travelling to Cambridge for a day trip from London is easy, with convenient transportation options in London or even other parts in the UK.

By bus: It takes about 2 hours from London to Cambridge, and costs ~£5 per person via Flixbus (affiliate link).

By train (Trainline): It takes about 1 - 1.5 hours from London to Cambridge, and costs ~£30.40 per person for a last minute Anytime Day Return ticket with a Railcard.

If you often travel domestically via train or live in London, I highly recommend getting a Trainline Railcard. It’ll provide you a 1/3 discount whenever you purchase a trainline ticket which will eventually pay itself off from how much you’re saving!

You can choose which railcard best suit your needs here (affiliate link).

Things to do in Cambridge

Take pictures of the King’s College Chapel

Begin your day at King's College, an iconic landmark of Cambridge's history and Gothic architectural beauty. The chapel is considered the

Continue your morning with a stroll along The Backs, where you can enjoy picturesque views of the colleges and the River Cam, setting the stage for your punting adventure later.

Explore the arts and craft market

Next, explore the vibrant Arts and Craft Market in the heart of Cambridge. This bustling market is home to local artisans and craftspeople showcasing their work, from handmade jewelry and artwork to adorable goose bags. It's the perfect place to find a unique souvenir or gift.

For lunch, grab a bite at one of the market's food stalls or visit a nearby café to sample local cuisine and relax before the next part of your adventure.

There’s a Hong Kong x Malaysian food stall in the middle of the market which smells absolutely amazing as well! I didn't manage to try it the last time I was there, but I’m definitely going to next time.

Grab a pint at The Eagle

The Eagle is the oldest pub but that’s not the main reason why you should head over; this pub is where scientists discovered the structure of DNA! If this isn’t the most British thing I’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.

There’s also a blue plaque outside of the bar where you can take a quick selfie with to show that you’ve been there. If you’re not a drinker, there’s also a popular ice-cream shop right next door called Jack’s Gelato.

Go punting on the River Cam

Everyone I asked told me that you haven’t fully experienced Cambridge if you haven’t gone punting. By everyone, I meant two people who I knew lived in Cambridge but you get what I mean.

You can either go on self-guided adventure at your own risk or opt for a tour with a skilled punter who can tell you stories and facts about the university while keeping you safe. This peaceful ride will show you great views of the Bridge of Sighs, the Wren Library, and the beautiful college "backs."

Have dinner at The Tiffin Truck

End your day in Cambridge with dinner at The Tiffin Truck. It’s a good Indian restaurant that packs a punch.

My friends and I enjoyed eating the Butter Chicken, Chicken Briyani, and Chicken 65 (the spice on this dish sneaks up on you!). A good sweet drink I also recommend ordering is the Mango Lassi, i.e. a yogurt-based mango smoothie.
