How to get from Bergen Airport to the City Centre?

Before your holiday even begins, the first thing you need to know is how to get to the city centre from the airport so that you can start exploring the town. I also included some a few tips on the payment methods preferred in Bergen, some useful apps and a place to store your luggage in town.

Overview

There are 3 different ways that you can get from the airport to the city centre:

Personally, I recommend prefer using the light rail since it’s the most affordable option, requires no changes and has lots of space.

However, if you have lots of bags and plan to stay on the hill-side of Bergen, I would recommend the Uber since it can be quite tiring to climb all the way up with your suitcases and you may need to track up some stairs too.

Light Rail (Bybanen)

Price: 40 NOK (Free if you have the Bergen Card)

The light rail is the equivalent to the metro / tram / tube and it’s different to the type of trains you’d use to travel from Bergen to Oslo.

For your ticket, I recommend either buying a Bergen Card online since the light rail and bus will be free while the card is valid and it also includes admission and discount to other attractions in Bergen.

You can also buy your ticket in the airport or buy it using the app ‘Skyss billett’ for easy access.

FAQs

  • You can get by just fine in Bergen with using only card payments - I didn’t use any cash at all during my trip!

The only time I can think you’d need cash is if you’re buying something from a market stall as those would prefer cash instead.

  • Yes! If you’re interested in exploring Bergen but want to drop of your bags for a bit, I recommend using the luggage storage lockers at Bergen train station!

You don’t need to pre-book anything and can rent a locker by the hour in one of their machines in the area.

You pay a flat rate for the first few hours and then pay for any additional time when checking out of your locker.

Airport Express Bus

Price: 179 NOK (Bergen Airport → Bergen Bus station)

Even though it costs more to take the bus, you have the benefit of not holding onto your bags for dear life as it goes in the cargo and it only takes 20-30 minutes. Each person is allocated 2 luggages per ticket, so if you have more than that, then i’d advise using a different travelling method instead.

For your specific route, you can check the prices and buy your ticket here.

Taxi / Uber

Price: 511 - 1000 NOK

Uber is the most convenient option out of the other three. You get to be dropped off directly at your accommodation and avoid having to drag your luggage around Bergen which can be quite tiring since it is hilly.

If you’re travelling with any elderly, have a lot of luggage or stay on top of the hill in Bergen, I would recommend considering using an Uber as it can be worth the convenience it provides.

I also ended up using an Uber when going to the airport from the city during my trip since it was snowing heavily and the roads can be slippery from ice. This can also be dangerous when dragging heavy luggage down the hill, especially on the stairs.

For the best taxi rates, I recommend using the Norges Taxis or Bergen Taxi app.
